Does the Bike I Learn on Effect What I Can Ride After Passing My CBT?
No, the current laws state that you can legally train on an automatic yet ride a manual 125cc after you pass your CBT test.
You will be taught the basics of clutch control and gear changing during your CBT test even if you learn on an automatic but you obviously won’t be able to practice how to do it.
We therefore highly recommend training on the same sort of bike you plan to ride once you have your licence.
If in the future you decide you want to ride a manual bike after learning on an automatic, you can always take an additional course that will teach you how to ride confidently on a manual bike, giving you the chance to practice first in the safety of a school's training ground.
The course is called a Gear conversion and it lasts for 2 hours. You can book this through RideTo just head to the main course page for more information.
Can I Fail a CBT?
A CBT test isn’t actually a ‘test’ even though it’s often referred to as one.
You aren’t guaranteed a CBT certificate just by attending the training course, you will need to prove to the instructor you have understood how to ride safely and can do so too.
If you listen carefully and practice what you’re taught calmly and confidently, most people can learn everything they need to after just one day of training and ‘pass’ at the end in order to get their certificate.
If you show signs that you cannot control the bike safely or that you don’t understand the rules of the road and are therefore putting yourself and others at risk, your instructor has the right to ask you to come back for further training.
If this happens you will need to book and pay for another CBT course.
If the idea of this worries you for financial reasons, we would recommend adding our Peace of Mind Policy to your CBT test booking.
For just £29.99, RideTo will pay for the second training day if you require one which means you could save around £130 if you are training at one of the schools near Cirencester.
