What is a CBT Test?
If you live in the UK and want to get riding on two wheels, whether that's on a moped, scooter or motorbike, you will need to complete a CBT as the first step.
Once you have passed this you can legally ride certain bikes, depending on your age, on UK roads. This is of course providing you have insurance and your bike has an MOT and been taxed.
CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training and is often called a ‘test’ but there is actually no formal test aspect to it, it’s just a day of training.
If you complete the training by showing the instructor you are competent at maneuvering the bike you will ‘pass’, however if for any reason they feel you would be unsafe on the roads after the one day course, they will ask you to come back for an additional day of training.
This is sometimes seen as a ‘fail’ but with one more day of training you should be able to master everything properly (this includes understanding the Highway Code).
What motorbike can I ride on a CBT licence?
This is dependent on your age but if you are 17 or older you can ride a motorbike or scooter with an engine up to 125cc. If you are 16 you would be limited to riding a 50cc moped until your 17th birthday.
For more information about other motorcycle licences you could progress onto after you’ve got your CBT, check out the RideTo UK Licence and Law Guide.
