What are the different motorcycle training courses?

If you are a complete beginner or haven’t taken a CBT test before you will need to take a CBT training course which is a one day motorcycle lesson to teach you everything you need to know about controlling and bike and learning to ride on roads. You don’t need to ever have been near a motorcycle before to attend this training, however you will need prior knowledge of the highway code to a good level, in order to be safe on the ride and understand road signs.

Although you can’t technically fail a CBT (as it’s not actually a test despite the name!) if the instructor thinks you are unsafe to ride by the end of the day of training, by either showing signs that you haven’t fully grasped how to control a bike or by not knowing the highway code well enough, they may not pass you. If this is the case you will need to attend further training to be able to actually pass and get your CBT training certificate, which will allow you to ride on UK roads.

If you’re a little nervous about the concept of learning to ride a moped, scooter or motorbike in Nottingham then you could take an ITM (introduction to motorcycling) before you take the CBT to give you more time to learn how to ride a motorcycle.

In order to ride a larger bike, without L plates, on motorways with a passenger, you will need to take a Full Motorcycle Licence training course. This takes multiple days to complete and there are different training packages depending on where you take your course.
