What is a CBT test?
A CBT is a training course that lasts one day, usually for around 6-8 hours depending on the ability levels of yourself and the others in your class.
Although it’s often called a ‘test’ there is no actual test element to it, it is simply a day of training taught by a qualified instructor.
This doesn’t mean that everyone is guaranteed a ‘pass’ though. The instructor has the authority to ask students to return for further training if they feel the student is unsafe when riding and would therefore be dangerous to go out on the road.
Why might I ‘fail’ a CBT?
Other reasons for not ‘passing’ a CBT can be easily avoided. These include not wearing the correct clothing - so make sure you look at our clothing guide and check what’s included in the training package at the CBT school you book onto. This will be listed on the confirmation email you receive after your CBT test is booked in.
If you turn up late to your training you will also be turned away and unable to join in. This is a rule set by the DVSA for safety reasons, so allow plenty of time to get to your CBT test and arrive a minimum of 15 minutes early.
When you book your CBT test you will have to confirm you’ve read the terms and conditions which include a series of statements you must confirm that you will / can do.
Do not book a CBT test if you cannot do one of the following as your training will be terminated and you will lose your money.
- You will present your valid UK Driving or Provisional licence (or a Full EU licence with UK counterpart licence number) it will be the physical licence and not a photo/ photocopy.
- You can speak and understand English and the Highway Code
- You can read a registration plate from 20.5 metres away with or without glasses
- Can ride an adult size bicycle (for balance purposes)
What if I Don’t Pass My CBT Test?
If at any stage of your training day your instructor believes you are unsafe to ride, either by not mastering how to control the bike or not understanding the rules of the roads which could then put others at risk, they will terminate your training and ask you to come back for further training.
If this is due to just needing some more time to get used to riding, you could benefit from purchasing the RideTo Peace of Mind policy before your training takes place.
For only £29.99 you will be covered for a second day of training should you need it. This could save you around £130 or more! Read our guide to learn more about the Peace of Mind Policy.
Certain reasons for ‘failing’ are not covered by the Peace of Mind Policy, such as not being able to speak or understand English to a high enough level, turning up late to training or not wearing the correct protective clothing.
