Ian was very patient and friendly when passing on his wealth of knowledge. From small mistakes to the larger concepts, everything is explained clearly and there is plenty of practice to really nail the techniques and control needed to ride safely and pass the tests.
If there is anything you’re struggling with, he takes the time to run through it and give helpful tips for improvement. The proof of Ian’s experience and skill is shown in the being able to pass both tests with a couple of minors within a week of getting on a big bike for the first time.
Thoroughly recommend Excel for all your motorbike training!

Ian has been a pleasure to learn and ride with throughout my training at Excel. I went from holding a CBT to holding a full category A license within a few weeks, and what a few weeks it has been!
The wealth of knowledge Ian provided was fantastic, from proper lane usage to solid decision making to the fine details of safety. Outside of training, Ian will probably take you to a couple of local businesses to grab a drink and something to eat, which exposes you to some awesome places locally. You’ll also meet some very friendly fellow trainees, too.
In terms of practice for Mod 1 and 2, Ian allowed me to have plenty for each before the time of the tests themselves, so that was great too!
Overall, great school to achieve your Mods at - I’m looking forward to returning to Ian for the Enhanced Rider Scheme.

Just passed my Mod1 and Mod2 with Excel. Really enjoyed the whole training experience, well apart from one day in the rain!! and learnt so much from Ian. Ian is a great instructor, calm, patient, knowledgable, fun and very professional. I've used other training schools for CBT in the past but Ian and Excel are by far the best training school in Colchester. I fully recommend them to anyone thinking of taking their bike test.

Ian is a good instructor, patient and knowledgeable. We went through mod 1 and 2 over the course of a week leading to both passes with just 1 minor on mod 1. Very friendly approach, if you want a high chance of success, use Excel Motorcycle Training.

I wanted to do my A2 auto and Excel are one of the only places with a bike suitable for this! Ian was a great instructor, the MOD 1 stuff was especially excellent. By the time the MOD 2 came around I was pretty relaxed and ready to have a nice ride!

After some other bad experiences with motorcycle trainers I ended up calling Ian and training with him at Excel. The training was everything I could have asked for, he was extremely helpful and answered all of my novice questions without making me feel silly. I would highly recommend Excel to any new beginner riders looking to pass their test quickly and efficiently, I feel I've left the week with good skills, knowledge and foundations to build upon. I couldn't have asked for any better.

I have spent around 6 days with both Ian and Barry, learning how to ride from scratch. I couldn’t recommend them enough, they both know exactly what they’re talking about and their love for riding is clear in their work! If you are even considering learning to ride I wouldn’t look anywhere else for instructors

Highly recommend!! Excell Motorcycle Training cares about the safety of motorcyclists, they are ridged with their training no short cuts are taken. Id never ridden a bike before and had no confidence when I started. Ian is a patient and calm man that will adapt his teaching style to suit the student. He doesn’t get frustrated or annoyed if you don't learn quickly.
I now have my license but also the confidence to be on the road on my own thanks to Ian.

I had a fantastic week with Ian, using one of Excel’s bikes. I had no previous riding experience and completed my CBT, Mod1 and 2 tests. Ian is a fantastic instructor and made me feel completely at ease at all times. He’s incredibly supportive and you can tell he’s extremely passionate about riding and teaching others to ride safely (rather than to pass their tests).

Ian at Excel Motorcycle Training was absolutely fantastic and had made a dream come true. He is extremely relaxing and calming when you're obviously nervous. His vast experience and knowledge of motorcycling is excellent and I would very very highly recommend Excel, not just for DAS Mod 1 and Mod 2, but all other types of Training from CBT to advanced and more. He has supported and educated me through the learning journey from CBT and Direct Access through to achieving repeated Gold standard tests every three years as a RoSPA Advanced Motorcyclist. Ian teaches in a very calm, supportive, progressive and holistic manner and constantly engages with rider and industry development - what he doesn't know is probably not worth knowing.
