What Do I Need to Ride a Motorcycle?
Firstly you will need to go to a one day training course called a CBT test. In order to be allowed to book a CBT there are a few requirements you must meet.
You will need to have either a UK provisional driving licence, a full UK drivers licence or an EU licence with UK counterpart licence number.
Another document to bring with you on your training day, just in case of a licence check, is your national insurance card.
Understanding and speaking English is very important as this is how you will learn from your instructor. They will teach you all you need to know about controlling and riding a bike, however you must already know / learn the Highway Code before you attend the CBT test.
After passing your CBT, if your bike is second hand, you will need to make sure your bike is legal by updating the vehicle logbook (V5C) to your own details.
The motorcycle must be taxed and a valid tax disk must be visibly displayed on your bike. If your bike is more than 3 years old it will also need a valid MOT to be on the roads.
Legally the only safety item you must wear when out riding is a helmet, however we advise wearing CE approved motorcycle gloves and also thick, sturdy boots with ankle support. Seasonally appropriate trousers and jackets are also strongly recommended - we stock loads of motorcycle gear over on our RideTo Store if you need to get kitted out!
Lastly you must have insurance before you start riding. For more information about insurance read through the 10 things to consider before buying motorcycle insurance.
Once you have sorted out all of the above you can head off on the roads and enjoy the freedom of traveling on 2 wheels!
