Learning to Ride a Motorcycle in East Kilbride

East Kilbride in Scotland is one of the largest towns in the South Lanarkshire region.

While public transport links can get you across the city, one way to have flexibility and freedom when traveling around is to learn to ride a motorcycle!

Did you know it only takes one day to pass a CBT test? So you can be on the roads in no time on either a 50cc moped or 125cc automatic scooter or manual motorbike depending on your age and of course personal choice!

At 16 you’re restricted to a 50cc moped but beyond that age you can ride anything upto a 125cc bike, including electric options and manuals and automatics!

There’s a huge range of 125cc motorbikes, with styles to suit everyone - check out some of the most popular bikes to ride with a CBT here.

Motorbikes are a great way to commute to work or travel around in your free time to see friends or explore local areas.

With lots of stunning countryside around East Kilbride you’re in for a treat if you go off exploring on your bike! Just be sure to avoid motorways as riders with a CBT licence aren’t allowed on Motorways - you also can’t take any passengers with you unfortunately.

If you feel this is restrictive you can look into completing a full motorcycle licence course after your CBT test which gives you more freedom. You also don’t have to renew it every 2 years like you do with a CBT!

What is a CBT test?

A CBT stands for compulsory basic training, it’s the first training course you will need to complete in order to get riding a motorbike of some form.

It is a one day training course that you must fully complete in order to ‘pass’, however there is no official ‘test’ at the end of it. You just need to learn everything your instructor teaches you and show them you can safely control a motorbike by completing a series of maneuvers at the training ground and then safely ride around the local roads of East Kilbride to prove you are capable of competently riding alongside other road traffic.

Once you have completed the day’s course you will get a certificate stating you can now legally ride upto a 125 ccc motorbike (age permitting).

A CBT licence has some limitations which is why it’s sometimes just the first step on the ladder of learning to ride a motorbike.
