Penrith to Alston

Another absolute corker of a route in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside. Starting out in Penrith where you can take in the beautiful medieval Penrith castle and other historic sites such as Kind Arthurs Round Table and Brougham Castle. If you fancy a spot to eat before setting off then why not try The Narrowbar Cafe for some fantastic breakfast and coffee.

Named one of the greatest roads in Britain and for good reason, the route sets off along the A686 passing through some quintessentially British villages towards Langwathby. From there you will start your ascent of the massive Hartside Summit, and this is where things really get fun. At over 1900ft this brilliant road snakes up the side of Hartside Pass with a great mix of sweeping bends and tight switchbacks. If you're a new rider, remember there's no pressure, just take your time and have fun. There are plenty of points to stop and recalibrate if you're finding it a little more challenging.

After you've reached the top of Hartside Pass where you can stop in at the Hartside Cafe for a quick brew and really take in the scenery. Head on down toward Alston and onwards into the Cumbrian countryside.

Click the link below, load up the route and set off for a brilliant day of riding. Have fun!
