Motorbike Parking in Canary Wharf — Bays and Car Parks

Author

Olivia C · May 22, 2026

Canary Wharf is one of the cheapest places in central London to park a motorbike, as long as you know where to look. Tower Hamlets is still one of the free Solo motorcycle bay boroughs, so most riders heading to the financial district end up parking on a street bay and walking the last five minutes rather than paying for the estate's indoor car parks. This guide covers both options, where to find them, and which one makes sense depending on the bike you ride.

If you don't yet have a CBT certificate, you can book CBT training in one of over 30 London locations and be road-legal within a day.

Where can you park a motorbike in Canary Wharf?

Canary Wharf has two parking systems that work in different ways. The streets around the estate are part of Tower Hamlets, and Tower Hamlets allows motorbikes to park free in any "Solo Motorcycle Only" bay. The estate itself is privately managed by Canary Wharf Group and runs its own car parks, where motorcycle parking is paid but indoor and secure.

For most commuters, the practical move is to park free on a Tower Hamlets street and walk into the estate. If you ride a higher-value bike (£6,000 or more, the kind that tends to follow Career Commuter types to the wharf), the secure indoor parking inside the estate can justify itself on a daily basis through reduced theft risk.

KEY FACTS: CANARY WHARF MOTORBIKE PARKING

  • Tower Hamlets streets: Free in any Solo Motorcycle Only bay (no time limit)
  • Estate car parks: £3.60 per visit/day, all 24/7 indoor, all accept motorcycles (Canada Square, Cabot Square, Jubilee Place, Westferry)
  • Resident bays: Need a Tower Hamlets motorcycle resident permit
  • Pay-and-display: Tower Hamlets does not allow motorbikes to park free in pay-and-display bays
  • Bank holidays: Tower Hamlets motorcycle bay restrictions don't apply, so you can park anywhere bays are marked

Free Solo motorcycle bays on Tower Hamlets streets

Tower Hamlets has Solo Motorcycle Only bays across the borough, including a good cluster around Canary Wharf. They're free to park in with no time limit, and the standard rules apply: park inside the dashed white bay markings, don't share a bay with another vehicle, and don't expect to park free in a pay-and-display bay because Tower Hamlets doesn't allow that for motorcycles.

The most useful bay clusters for Canary Wharf commuters are:

  • Marsh Wall: Solo bays along the road south of the South Quay DLR, five minutes' walk into the heart of the estate.
  • Westferry Road: Bays on the streets parallel to West India Avenue and Cabot Square.
  • The streets behind South Quay station: Generally quieter than the closer-in streets and easier to find a free bay in the morning.
  • Poplar (north side of the estate): Solo bays around Aspen Way and on the streets running north toward Poplar DLR.

The London Bike Bays map at londonbikebays.co.uk keeps a borough-wide map of every Solo bay, including the ones around Canary Wharf, with rider-submitted updates on which bays fill earliest.

Resident motorbike parking in Tower Hamlets requires a motorcycle resident permit. If you live in the borough and want to park in resident-only bays, that's the route. If you commute in from elsewhere, the Solo bays are the only free option on borough streets.

Canary Wharf Estate car parks

The Canary Wharf Estate operates four public car parks, and all four accept motorcycles:

  • Canada Square Car Park
  • Cabot Square Car Park
  • Jubilee Place Car Park
  • Westferry Car Park

All four are indoor with a 2.0m height restriction (no issue for any standard motorbike), cashless payment only (debit, credit, or contactless), and carry Park Mark and Park Access security awards. They're patrolled and CCTV-monitored, which is the practical reason to use them over street parking for higher-value bikes.

Motorbike parking in the Canary Wharf Estate car parks is £3.60 per visit/day.

Should you park on the street or in an estate car park?

For most commuters, free on a Tower Hamlets street is the right answer. The walk into the estate from Marsh Wall, Westferry Road, or the streets behind South Quay is short, the bays don't time out, and zero pounds per day is hard to beat.

The estate car parks make sense in three specific situations:

  • Your bike is worth more than the daily rate × the rest of your bike's life. A £10,000 bike at higher theft risk on a street bay is a different sum to a £2,000 commuter at low risk.
  • You ride in for a meeting and don't want to leave the bike unattended for hours in an unfamiliar area.
  • Weather and security matter more than cost for the day. Cold months, holiday weekends with reduced street activity, or any day when you're carrying valuables in a topbox.

The four estate car parks are connected directly to the main shopping malls and the office cores, so the walk-in is shorter than from a Tower Hamlets street bay. That's the second reason commuters who can expense it tend to default to the indoor option.

Are electric motorcycles free to park in Canary Wharf?

On Tower Hamlets streets, yes. Motorcycle bays are free for all motorbikes in the borough, electric or petrol. There's no separate EV discount to claim, because the bays are already free.

In the estate car parks, electric motorbikes follow the same paid motorcycle rate as petrol bikes. The estate doesn't currently publish an EV-specific motorcycle discount.

The bigger electric-bike advantage at Canary Wharf is the ULEZ exemption, which applies across the whole of London for all-electric motorbikes. We've covered the rules in detail in our guide to motorbikes, ULEZ and the London congestion charge.
