Motorcycle Theory Test And The CBT - What You Need To Know

When starting out as a new rider, it’s natural to wonder how the CBT and theory test fit into the licensing process. Do they need to be done in a certain order, or can you choose? Let’s explore how these two steps work together and what you should know before getting started.

What is a Motorcycle Theory Test

A motorcycle theory test is a mandatory test for riders who wish to progress from being CBT-certified to becoming fully licensed. The theory test consists of two parts: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception. If you aim to eventually hold a full motorcycle licence, this test is a crucial step to keep in mind.

Do You Need a Theory Test For the CBT?

No, you don’t need to take the motorcycle theory test before doing your CBT. The theory test only comes into play if you want to move on to a full motorcycle licence later.

It’s a common misunderstanding—lots of people think the theory test has to come first, but that’s not the case. For your CBT, you just need to make sure you meet the basic requirements, like having a provisional licence, and you’re good to go!

CBT and the Highway Code

Although you don’t need to have passed your theory test before a CBT, it is still essential to have a strong understanding of the UK Highway Code. The Highway Code is the rulebook for staying safe and confident on the road, and it’ll come up during your training.

Your instructor will ask you questions about key topics, like:

  • Road signs: Knowing what speed limits, warnings, and instructions mean.

  • Road markings: Understanding lane markings and rules for safe positioning.

  • Priority rules: Figuring out who goes first at junctions, roundabouts, and crossings.

On top of that, you’ll need to put this knowledge into practice during the riding part of your CBT.

You can check out free resources online or grab a copy of the Highway Code book to review the basics before training.

Do I need a CBT Before Taking a Theory Test?

No, you don’t need to complete your CBT before taking the motorcycle theory test. The DVSA lets you decide the order, so you’re free to take the theory test either before or after your CBT.

That said, most riders choose to do their CBT first. It helps build road experience and confidence, which can make the theory test feel easier. But the choice is entirely yours!

FAQs

Do I need to do my theory test before CBT?

No, you are not required to take the theory test before the CBT. However, if you’re planning to progress to a full licence, you can choose to take the theory test either before or after your CBT. Passing the theory test is not a prerequisite for riding with a CBT certificate.

Do you need to take a theory test to ride a 125cc?

To ride a 125cc motorbike or scooter, you do not need to take a theory test. You simply need to book and pass your CBT training. As long as you are over the age of 17, you can ride a 125cc motorbike or scooter with L plates displayed, without passengers, and not on motorways.
