A Guide To The IAM RoadSmart Advanced Rider Course

Motorbike riding in the UK has changed a lot over the last few decades; more traffic, new motoring legislation and the emergence of bad habits like road rage and lane-hogging all play their part.

For those who want to ensure their riding skills are up to scratch, an Advanced Rider Course with IAM RoadSmart could be the answer.

Standard motorcycle lessons should teach you everything you need to know to ride safely and properly on the roads, including navigating junctions and roundabouts. Advanced riding courses, meanwhile, focus on riding in situations such as at night, in severe weather, or on a motorway or dual carriageway.

What does becoming a more skillful rider mean to you? Better road positioning? Enhanced observation skills? Or simply greater bike control?

Whichever aspect of riding you’re looking to improve, the IAM RoadSmart Advanced Rider course will bring your skills up to an Advanced level, helping you to get more out of riding and preparing you for any on-road scenario. This is exactly what Lorraine found; “Absolutely excellent course for improving your skills and safety on the road, Observers are knowledgeable friendly and approachable, can’t fault any of it and would 100% recommend to new and experienced riders”.

You will be paired with a skilled IAM RoadSmart Observer, all of whom are volunteers and Advanced Riders themselves – they hold an additional Institute of the Motor Industry Observer qualification.

Included in the course is a series of rides where an Observer will meet you in a location that is convenient for you both. Then you’ll be put forward for your Advanced test and once passed, become a full IAM RoadSmart member, opening you up to a host of benefits and potentially discounted insurance. Having an Advanced Rider course under your belt also unlocks the possibility to volunteer for other charities, which many IAM RoadSmart members find extremely rewarding.

IAM RoadSmart is a charity committed to making roads safer for all users – they want to help you enjoy your passion for riding as skillfully as possible, grow friendships and create memorable experiences on your bike, now and in the future.

You may have heard of IAM RoadSmart or the Advanced course before and wonder if it’s for you, which is exactly what Mario thought; “I have to admit, I thought I might be joining something a bit stuffy and dull. To be honest, I wasn’t averse to this as I just wanted to stay safe. The image of fun or excitement definitely wasn’t on the radar. I was naive not to have considered that members would be passionate about motorcycling and all the opportunities it brings. Developing skills has inexorably increased my enjoyment of motorcycling.”
