Who can take CBT Training?

If you hold a valid British passport, are at least 16-years-old and hold a valid UK provisional licence then you can go ahead and complete your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training). If you don’t hold a British passport then you need to have been a British resident for at least 185 days. If you’re 16 when you take your CBT, then that means you can ride a motorcycle or scooter with a maximum capacity of 50cc, and a restricted top speed of 30mph.

If you’re aged 17 or above you will be eligible to ride a motorcycle or scooter with a engine capacity no larger than 125cc and a maximum power output of 11kW.

Don’t worry about buying riding equipment such as a helmet before your CBT Training in Maidstone. The Training centre will provide a helmet, but they may not be able to provide you with a jacket and gloves, so check beforehand. Make sure you wear sturdy boots that cover your ankles, and thick jeans.

What happens on CBT Test in Maidstone?

Despite the name, the CBT Test isn’t actually a Test. CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training, and it’s the minimum standard you need to reach before you can legally ride on the UK’s roads with L-plates.

The day will start in the classroom, where your instructor will make sure you know basic Highway Code, and teach you how to control motorcycles and scooters. Once this portion has ended, you’ll head outside, where you’ll be introduced to your motorcycle or scooter for the day. If you’re riding a manual motorcycle, the instructor will explain how the gears and clutch work. This is where you’ll get your first bit of action. Your instructor will guide you round a simple course in a controlled area, and ask you to perform certain manoeuvres. Once you have shown the instructor you can control the bike in a confident and safe manner you’ll be ready for the final part.

To complete your CBT Training in Maidstone you will head out on the open road with another student, where you will need to demonstrate your ability to ride safely on the roads. The ride will last at least two hours, and once you’ve completed it you will be presented with your CBT pass certificate.
